Thinking Outside The Box

Thinking Outside of the Box - Don’t Just Try the Obvious

Many people assume that only law firms provide legal services and employ legal staff. However this cuts out a wide range of employers and organisations that offer opportunities to work in a legal setting.

For example although there are over 80,000 solicitors employed in private practice, over 14,000 are employed in commerce and industry, 4,000 are employed in local government, The Government Legal Service (GLS) employ approximately 2,000 and the Crown Prosecution service employs over 2,000. NHS Trusts, charities and professional sports bodies also employ legal staff.

Below is a list of companies and organisations that may use in house legal services.  It is provided to showcase the diverse range of companies and organisations with legal staff. It isn’t a comprehensive list and is provided to be used as an ideas generator to assist with making speculative approaches.

LISTING DOES NOT IMPLY VACANCY OR WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITY

ABS (Alternative Business Structures)

As part of the Legal Services Act 2007 lawyers and non-lawyers are now able to set up legal partnerships and companies to provide a range of legal services. Companies such as Co-op, Eddie Stobart and Saga have set up ABS’ to provide a legal service. For an explanation of the implications of this change see the Guardian report on the future of law.
